Effect of Mutation and Recombination on the Genotype-Phenotype Map

چکیده

The effect of genetic operators other than selection, such as mutation and recombination, on the genotype-phenotype map is considered. In particular, when the genotypic fitness landscape exhibits a “symmetry”, i.e. many genotypes corresponding to the same phenotype have equal fitness values, it is shown that such operators can break this symmetry. The consequences of this “induced symmetry breaking” are investigated. Specifically, it is shown that it generically leads to an increase in order or selforganization in the system and to the phenomenon of orthogenesis. Additionally, it is shown that it potentially leads to a more robust evolution circumventing some of the problems of brittleness. The above points are supported by explicit, analytic results associated with some simple one and two-locus models and also by some much more complicated numerical simulations.

FMF Genotype-phenotype correlation in Iranian Azeri Turks: Association between M694V/R761H mutation and amyloidosis

Objective(s):Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF), an inherited autosomal recessive disorder, is frequently present among individuals of Mediterranean origin. Differences in the clinical manifestations of FMF between different ethnic groups have been documented. The aim of the present study was to determine the most common characteristics of FMF and the relationship between clinical findings and ...

Identification of a Novel Arylsulfatase B Gene Mutation in Three Unrelated Iranian Mucopolysaccharidosis Type-VI Patients with Different Phenotype Severity

Background: Mucopolysaccharidosis type-VI (MPS-VI), which is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait, results from the deficiency of N-acetylgalactosamine 4-sulfatase (arylsulfatase B) activity and the lysosomal accumulation of dermatan sulfate. In this study, ARSB mutation analysis was performed on three unrelated patients who were originally from the West Azerbaijan province of Iran. Method...

toyLIFE: a computational framework to study the multi-level organisation of the genotype-phenotype map

The genotype-phenotype map is an essential object to understand organismal complexity and adaptability. However, its experimental characterisation is a daunting task. Thus, simple models have been proposed and investigated. They have revealed that genotypes differ in their robustness to mutations; phenotypes are represented by a broadly varying number of genotypes, and simple point mutations su...

Complex Adaptations and the Evolution of Evolvability

1 One may wonder, ...] how complex organisms evolve at all. They seem to have so many genes, so many multiple or pleiotropic eeects of any one gene, so many possibilities for lethal mutations in early development, and all sorts of problems due to their long development. Abstract: The problem of complex adaptations is studied in two largely disconnected research traditions: evolutionary biology ...

Perspective: Complex Adaptations and the Evolution of Evolvability.

The problem of complex adaptations is studied in two largely disconnected research traditions: evolutionary biology and evolutionary computer science. This paper summarizes the results from both areas and compares their implications. In evolutionary computer science it was found that the Darwinian process of mutation, recombination and selection is not universally effective in improving complex...
